"Madam President, I would like to add my voice to those who are calling for an emergency debate on the escalating crisis with regard to foot-and-mouth disease in Great Britain.
I am not raising this subject with the intention of embarrassing the British Government in any way, but I am extremely concerned for European farmers, for the British farmers who are bearing the brunt of the crisis at the present time, and, in particular, I am concerned for farmers in Ireland.
You will be aware that Ireland depends more than any other Member State of the European Community on the beef industry. We export 90% of our entire production. For that reason it is extremely important that the most severe restrictions are put into place in Great Britain. I believe you should invite the Commissioner to come and give his views on the overwhelming crisis that we are going through at the present time. I would ask you, as you have always done in the past, to find the time for an emergency debate on this matter."@en1
