". – The EIB lags far behind better-known institutions such as the World Bank in terms of transparency, accountability and the ways it addresses environmental and social issues in its work. Founded in 1958 under the Treaty of Rome, the European Investment Bank (EIB) is the official financing institution of the European Union. However, there seems to be little public knowledge of the Bank's existence and operations, although it is a public institution that lends more money every year than, for example, the better-known World Bank. With the entry into force of the Treaty of Amsterdam, sustainable development has become a central objective of EU cooperation. According to the new Article 6 in the EC Treaty, environmental protection requirements must be integrated into other EU policies."@en1
