"As I mentioned previously, the Council had the opportunity to discuss the common position on Afghanistan at its meeting at the end of January. I can assure you that, in the discussions concerning the situation in Afghanistan, the Council, too, is aware of the dreadful witness accounts to which the honourable Member refers. I see three paths along which the Council and the Union must proceed. First of all, we must continue with generous humanitarian aid in order to alleviate suffering, particularly suffering by Afghan women and children. Secondly, we must continue to exert pressure on the Taliban regime so that it ceases its systematic crimes against human rights. Thirdly, we must give Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries more advice and support so that they are better able temporarily to accommodate the refugees – primarily women and children – who are forced to leave Afghanistan."@en1
