"Since it is on safety at sea, I could not fail to vote in favour of Mr Bakopoulos' report too, concerning the establishment of the Committee on Safe Seas and the Prevention of Pollution by Ships. This time, Mr President, I communicated via e-mail with one of my former bosses who worked on the ships on which I travelled between New York and the Bahamas when, at 21 years old, before entering political life, I worked as a sailor, as I said before. This gentleman, who has become a purser – his name is Augusto Fazio – said to me: "Well done. The European Parliament is right to concern itself with the safety of the sea and to prevent it becoming polluted. But are you also concerning yourselves with the safety of us sailors who work on the ships?" "Of course," I said. "Be patient. There will also be reports dealing with your safety as well.""@en1
