"Mr President, I support this directive on the resale right for works of art. Our world admires artists, luckily. Long may it last! There must be more to this world than mere numbers and sterile computers: it must include artists – for as long as possible. In order to permit these artists to express themselves fully, it is certainly useful and important to make it possible for them to receive payment when their works are sold. However, Mr President, should we not also be thinking about their pensions? I remember a deaf-mute artist who came to ask for my help many times in Italy in applying for a higher pension: his pension was effectively too low to live on and every now and again he was forced to sell one of his fine paintings, one of his works of art. Well, in my opinion, we should also do something – I would advocate in the near future – about artists' pensions."@en1
