"Mr President, the aim of this report – to establish common rules in Europe on takeover bids – relates only to a tiny minority of large corporations and their major shareholders, who dominate company ownership. In the legal wrangling between the Council and Parliament, there was not even any mention of the workers, technicians and employees who actually turn the wheels of these companies which the large financial groups are fighting over. The European institutions care little about the job losses and closures caused by almost every company takeover or merger. Personally speaking, I have no interest in the legal problems these large shareholders may have, and I will vote against this report. However, I would like to express my solidarity with the people exploited by these companies, and if Parliament had any respect whatsoever for the workers, it would at least prevent takeovers causing redundancies."@en1
