"Madam President, I was in Rome last week. I have a nephew, my sister’s son, who has been at the NATO bases in the United States learning to fly fighter planes, and he has been promoted, so he is ready to be an air-force pilot. While chatting to me he learnt that a military force of the States of Europe is being organised, a force ready to intervene to keep the peace in and around Europe. ‘Oh, I’d like to be part of that!’ he told me. But it is not because of that that I mention him, of course – if he is good, he will go far – but because we then carried on talking and he added, ‘But this idea of a European army and a European police force is quite right! Why do we need standing armies to defend the borders between Italy, France, Germany and Spain, which do not exist any more? Joining forces is a positive step.’."@en1
