"Mr President, ever since I have been a Member of the European Parliament, I have had sleepless nights worrying about whether I will succeed in contributing to a European law on pensions before my term expires. So far it has not been possible because pensions do not come under the European Parliament's mandate! However, Mr Gil-Robles' report is a help in this respect because it proposes that, for certain issues and sectors, some of the Member States of the European Union reach agreement upon joint actions. I therefore hope that we will opt in the near future for closer cooperation between certain States – including Italy – so that we can adopt common rules for the management of pensions and workers' pension contributions. Then I will be able to sleep peacefully once more."@en1
