lpv:spoken text	"Mr President, the real solution to the whole problem of arms exports and arms production is that we should convert to non-weapons production. We are in the 21st century now. The technology and expertise that is available should be used for something constructive in society, something that will benefit people rather than something that is going to annihilate and destroy people. We should be focusing on the conversion to non-weapons production instead of on how we will compete with the other weapons manufacturing countries around the world. Countries with very few resources and very little money are coerced and forced into buying weapons when they should be using that money for social and health problems in their own countries instead of contributing to insecurity in the region and in many cases to the abuse of their own people with these weapons. We only have to look at Indonesia and the fact that the European Union could not wait to lift the arms embargo, or to not reinstate it. That was deplorable. If you look at the other countries in Europe which are now getting involved in the arms industry it is extremely disturbing. I come from Ireland, which has a track record of non-weapons production and no involvement in the arms industry. Now I find that contracts for arms and components for arms are increasing every year. In Northern Ireland, where there is a so-called peace process one of the big companies that has come there and been welcomed with open arms is Raytheon one of the biggest arms manufacturers in the world. That is a complete contradiction in terms. We should tackle this. We should keep the arms industries out. That is not where we should be providing jobs. We should be providing jobs for people in something that is constructive and positive for society."@en1
