"C
Of course, it is important for the respective Member States to make a list of the existing industrial land that is polluted and the best way to tackle this problem. As I have already said, we see this as a very great concern also from an economic point of view for many of the candidate countries, where this is often mentioned as an immense problem.
Up to now we have mainly regarded this as a local and national issue. In order to be able to clean up in the best way possible, we need to consider what sort of pollution is involved and what the local conditions are like. We have nothing against creating a strategy, if the Member States also want that, but in that case we must also get hold of the resources to deal with it. As it looks so far, this has not been something that we have given the highest priority to, but naturally I think that it is very important for a proper inventory to be made and for a plan to be drawn up by the Member States, and why not also research and development in the area in order to find the best methods for cleaning up polluted industrial land."@en1
