"I share the view of the honourable Member in the sense that we cannot conduct this exercise in a secret way. It is not the intention of the Commission to do anything in secret generally and more specifically, in this area. On the contrary, we are trying to promote broad consultation on this issue, which is a very difficult one. Nobody has yet found the right answer. We have to follow the discussions that are going on in several international fora, for example the special convention the Council of Europe is preparing on cybercrime and the discussion on OECD. We also need to follow very closely the evolution of the legislative amendments that are being introduced in several Member States, dealing with the very sensitive question of retaining traffic data for the purpose of law enforcement.
As I have said to Mrs Cederschiƶld, the
initiative action plan will also include a list of actions aimed at reinforcing security for the users of the Internet and also on the specific question of
commerce.
According to the timetable fixed by the Summit of Santa Maria Da Feira these actions will be implemented in the next few months and we will get the assessment that the honourable Member mentioned in her question."@en1
