"Ladies and gentlemen, I am perhaps the longest-standing parliamentarian in this House, having been elected to the French Parliament 45 years ago and having sat in this House for sixteen years. I have always sat as a Member of the Opposition and it has been an honour to do so. Since an urgent parliamentary procedure is by no means justified, I should like to put my point of view to the Committee on Legal Affairs. In any event, ladies and gentlemen, I would ask you to apply the legal precedents that were more respected in the case of our colleague, Mr Tapie, and to grant me time to lodge an appeal before you take a decision that would be irrevocable. The French Prime Minister, as the head of the executive, has just decreed that my mandate as a Member of the legislative body is to be withdrawn which is a violation of the fundamental principle of the separation of powers, although this would not be the case in the Soviet Union. My parliamentary immunity has been disregarded and I have been made ineligible for a year for committing a none too serious misdemeanour involving verbal abuse in an incident during an electoral campaign which my government has taken to mean that they have to withdraw my mandate for four years, which is obviously completely unfair. Nevertheless, I have two months in which to lodge an appeal to the Council of State, and I have informed the European Court of Human Rights."@en1
