"Mr President, on behalf of the Union for a Europe of Nations Group, I should like to express my confidence in the Council’s handling of this matter and, in common with others, I want to urge the Council now to make a decision about establishing Eurodac. We are talking about establishing an area which claims to offer a high degree of legal protection, and I think it odd that, in the next sentence, we express a lack of confidence in its being possible to administer such an arrangement responsibly. In my view, the purpose is to safeguard the rights of asylum seekers, and there is no question of infringing the rights of those who honestly and legitimately request asylum. I cannot imagine that either the Council or the Commission might wish to construct this system in such a way that it could include restrictions of any kind upon the freedom of law-abiding citizens. The system is quite in accordance with the creation of an area of freedom and justice, and this is something we support."@en1
