"Mr President, the Commission shares the view expressed by the Parliament in its motion for a resolution, both with regard to the firm commitment by the Indonesian government to promote democracy and the respect for human rights, and the need to support the Indonesian government in its efforts to limit the violence and restore human rights in the province of the Moluccas. With regard to peaceful negotiations as an instrument to restore peace between the Muslim and Christian communities, the Commission is convinced that the current situation, worrying as it is, requires an effort by the international community. It is in this spirit that we should support the Indonesian government and avoid any reaction of a punitive nature. The latest statement by the presidency, on 17 January, precisely reflects this attitude and, on behalf of Commissioner Patten, I can assure you that the Commission endorses the ideas expressed in the statement. Nevertheless, the General Affairs Council, which is to meet on Monday, 24 January, will provide an opportunity to examine Parliament’s request. Furthermore, the imminent visit of the Indonesian president to Brussels and other European capitals will provide an opportunity to assure him and his government of our willingness to make every effort necessary to resolve this situation peacefully. As far as humanitarian aid is concerned, ECHO and the Commission are both minded to increase it."@en1
