". – On the last point that the honourable Member mentioned, we have in fact taken a number of actions to try to help the Colombian Government deal with the very serious drugs problem, including trade preferences, and we will continue to do so. On the first point that she mentioned, I do not think that the Colombian Government would disagree with the importance of dealing with the paramilitaries. It is its capacity to deal with them militarily which has been one of the problems over the years. I very much hope that the present negotiations will deliver to the people of Colombia the peace which they deserve. In the meantime, what worries me, and I think worries the honourable Member, is the very serious security situation for human rights activists in Colombia. They have to be extraordinarily brave to do the important work that they do. There is a limit to the amount we can do ourselves to increase their personal security though we continue to press our concern about that matter on the Colombian authorities. We will go on doing so. We also try to monitor the situation very closely with the Member States' embassies in Bogotá. So we do our best, but it does remain a subject to me of very great concern that so many people, young people for instance, are having to put their lives at risk to try to secure human rights in their country."@en1
