"Mr President, for us Socialists, the Court of Auditors is basic to the European Union. That may be seen from the large number of Socialists who are speaking here today. It is also a very important tool which citizens have for scrutinising and supervising the European Union’s activities and holding it accountable. As has been said here on a number of occasions, that is also why we were irritated by the fact that the President of the Court of Auditors was not previously able to appear here before Parliament. At the same time as the annual report of the Court of Auditors was being presented, an incident occurred at the Commission’s official office in Stockholm. It emerged that inadmissible wage payments had been made there. One wonders how it is going to be possible to keep the whole of the European Union in order if a small office of 20 people cannot be kept in check. That is where the Court of Auditors comes in. I should like to say that how this small office and the way in which it has carried out its duties and managed its finances is to be dealt with will be a test of the European Union’s credibility in this context, that is to say of its openness and accountability. I should like to ask the President of the Court of Auditors, who has visited Stockholm, what impressions he has obtained of the incident there and what measures might be expected to be taken."@en1
