"Madam President, can I say I am very pleased to accept the glowing tributes paid to my colleagues for the success achieved at the weekend. I would stress the credit that should be given to my party leader, David Trimble, for his courage and fortitude. There are very few times you see a political person putting everything on the line. He put his entire future on the line. I just hope he succeeds. There is still a long way to go. Do not be over-enthusiastic, but I have no doubt that he would be delighted. I will pass on to him the best wishes of this Parliament for the future. There was a delegation from the European People’s Party in Belfast on Monday who were able to witness the historic happenings on that particular day. David Trimble expressed his wish and desire to come to Europe again, hopefully in the middle of January, and I would look forward to that happening, as I am sure, Madam President, you will too."@en1
