"Mr President, the Council wants to act openly to achieve the best possible result at the United Nations General Assembly. I also hope that we can have talks with other possible supporters of the project. With this process still under way, the draft text has not yet been finalised. The resolutions of the Commission on Human Rights contain a reference to the question of a moratorium. Setting a deadline is a good thing in itself, and it would be good to achieve such a thing, but it is not entirely without problems. I would also like to stress that we all have an obligation to try and encourage the abolition of the death penalty in our official contacts, at one-off events, at official announcements and in multilateral forums. It is also important that when we have political discussions with countries such as China, Iran and the United States we try and raise the issue of capital punishment at those meetings also."@en1
