"The nature of this matter and the manner in which negotiations were conducted in the Committee on Fisheries make this a difficult vote.
I voted in favour of the Commission proposal, because I am completely opposed to the practice of finning and, therefore, in favour of the full use of the shark. I supported the derogation provided for in Article 4, as I believe it be an adequate solution given the current circumstances of the sector in the Iberian Peninsula. This derogation could be maintained for a while.
Furthermore, the sector in question should produce a detailed study on the overall costs resulting from the new rules. In any case, they need to be accompanied by an effective system of controls in fishing ports that is genuinely enforced, and we must align our practices with international recommendations."@en1
